This highly anticipated art experience now in its fourth year – provides an opportunity to view and purchase a wide variety of art from both emerging and acclaimed artists who have made Porterville their home. The art community throws open its doors to visitors over this weekend – welcoming the public into their studios. Art ranges from paintings, jewellery, and ceramics to bespoke tableware, woodwork, mosaics, crochet, quilting, beading and more.
15 venues throughout the town – including the brand-new custom-built studio of renowned ceramicist Carin Dorrington – will be showcasing the work of a myriad of artists. In addition to this, several artists will also be offering ceramic and painting workshops over the course of the weekend. Some of the acclaimed artists to anticipate are John Bauer, a ceramicist and materials engineer; Clare Menck and Arend Louw, both painters; as well as Annelie Janse van Rensburg, a ceramicists.
Also worth visiting is the Mosaic Route which features the mosaic art of several talented youth from Monte Bertha, a neighbourhood that is a legacy of the former apartheid dispensation. The route tells the story of historic moments and sites in mosaic and the full detail of each site can be read when scanning the OR Code on the mural.
Proudly Porterville offers art enthusiasts, collectors, investors and interior decorators alike a weekend not to be missed.
And it is not just about the art. There are many other activities on offer to make a weekend of it.
The Porterville community has come together to produce an exciting and varied festival that includes live music with Francois van Coke performing on the Friday night – outdoor events, culinary experiences, and family friendly fun. For foodies there are a myriad of coffee shops, restaurants, and eateries – as well as a popular weekly Farmers Market that draws visitors in their droves. Gin fans can enjoy a gin-tasting and tapas experience at the boutique distillery in the mountains above Porterville.
Outdoor enthusiasts are also in for a treat with a visit to Porterville, which offers a variety of hiking trails to fascinating destinations. There is also an uphill waterfall trail dotted with 22 waterfalls snaking their way down the mountainside, interspersed with crystal clear pools for a cooling dip. Mountain-bikers will love the many trails that wind their way through the surrounding countryside.
These are just a few examples of what is on offer which allow visitors to experience the Porterville village life and immerse themselves in the many wonderful country town offerings that make rural living so appealing. Nearly all the attractions at Proudly Porterville are within walking distance from each other, so visitors can park and stroll through the town, enjoying the art exhibitions, stopping for a meal, buying local fare – all with a beautiful mountain backdrop.
Porterville is only 150 km’s from Cape Town so well within reach for a day-trip, but there is so much to see and do that visitors are encouraged to book and make a full weekend of it. Guus takes to the road

Guus van Veen is a cyclist that does not hold back when it comes to challenging himself.
This 23 year old, from the Netherlands, has cycled his way across 2 continents and we were privileged to touch base with him and talk about his incredible journey, thus far.
He is quite modest about this accomplishment and he comes across as a shy, young man, but his confidence and passion shines through.
The idea of embarking on this epic adventure already started 3 years ago.
Guus slowly started saving up, while putting everything in place. Which included preparing his parents, as he is an only child.
He eventually quit his job in the military, and on the 4th of July, 2020 he cycled away from his home towards the South of Europe.
What stands out is the fact that he started this journey amidst a global pandemic, while most countries were in lockdown and borders were closed.
When asked about the difficulties and challenges this must have brought about, Guus smiles and admits that many luxuries known to man he can live without.
He is however constantly humbled by the kindness and selflessness of strangers, as he was fed and taken care of by many people, regardless of their race or religion and they never expected anything in return.
To him, this is proof that love still guides the human spirit, but adds, on a more serious note, that this way of traveling is not for the fainthearted.
When asked how he ended up in Malmesbury, Guus smiles and talks about how he met local resident, Paul Minnaar, while the latter was on holiday with family.
They instantly clicked and after spending some time with the family, they were kind enough to invite him to their home, in Malmesbury, once he reached Cape Town.
He is extremely grateful and thankful for their kindness and hospitality, and confesses that this is the longest period of time that he has spent, in one place, as a stopover.
On Thursday, 9 September 2021, Guus continued his journey as he started cycling towards Namibia.
He plans on making stops in Angola, Congo and the DRC, before he starts his journey home again.
It could take him almost a year before he’ll finally be back in the Netherlands.
We wish you well on the next half of your adventure, Guus.

Benefits of indoor tanning

There is a new kid in town…Gleam Sunbed Studio in Malmesbury, run by owner Chantal Taljaard.
Just in time for the beginning of summer and for your matric dance!
Having a perfect, bronze tan all year long is something most women (and some men) dream about. Thanks to modern sunless tanning technologies, this dream can easily come true for all you bronze-hue craving people who feel comfortable showing some skin.
According to many beauty experts, sunless tanning looks much better and is actually much healthier for your skin than being exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

  1. It Reduces the Risk of Skin Cancer
Although it might sound a bit odd, sunless tanning does reduce the risk of cancer development.
Yes, UV rays are notorious for having a plethora of harmful effects on the human body – they promote abnormal cell growth and are known to kill the cells in our organism. However, since one of the major benefits of indoor tanning is also the boost of vitamin D (more on this below), sunless tanning can actually reduce the risk of the following cancers:
    Skin
    Kidney
    Ovarian
    Breast cancer
But how exactly does indoor tanning reduce the risk of skin cancer?
It all comes down to the amount of time spent exposed to UV rays.
Compared to outdoor tanning, indoor tanning techniques are much faster and require less time for your body to be exposed to UV rays.
Plus, with regular sun tanning, there’s always the possibility to spend hours and hours in the sun, without even being aware of the repercussions. Whether you fall asleep on the beach, or you lose track of time playing sports, your skin gets much more sun exposure than it is recommended.
This doesn’t happen in tanning beds or in spray on tanning booths, so the risk of burning your skin is much lower, but you DO get all the benefits of regular tanning.
Always make sure you follow whatever guidelines you get from sunless tanning technicians, regardless of whether you are opting for spray-on tans or tanning beds. The majority of salons and companies have policies and a set of rules that you need to follow. Some of them include:

Use tanning beds only once per day
Don’t use tanning beds more than twice a week
If you are a first-timer, your first tanning session shouldn’t last more than seven minutes
Use goggles
Avoid tyrosine-based tanning accelerators
Avoid tanning enhancers/tingles or pills
Do not exfoliate your skin just before your spray-on tanning session.
Contact Chantall on 082 324 7593 to make your appointment at Gleam Sunbed Studio in Piet Retief Street, Malmesbury. They are running an opening special where you only pay R250 for 10 sessions!
