Swartland Skou gekanselleer

Splash for racers

Perfect weather, awesome stages and great rallying made the CPMCC Porterville Rally one to remember! If only for the fact that CPMCC President, Robert Marle, had celebrated his birthday leading into the event.
In fact, somehow doubt whether Owen Jones and Aden Bredenkamp will ever consider another event better as the young combination stepped up to the top of the podium on debut in their 454 CPMCC S4 Subaru Impreza WRX STi 4×4 Turbo 2.0.
They could not have picked a better event on which to shine as Maj Pule Maloka, No 2 of the SAAF Silver Falcons Team 84, opened proceedings with an impressive solo aerial display in a Pilatus PC7 MkII from Central Flying School Langebaanweg. When the Starting Order appeared the 19 strong entry had shrunk to 17 teams but they had veteran (retired) controls Lance and Rosemary Maytham releasing them from the Porterville showgrounds.
Unexpectedly the very first retirement from the event was pre-event favourites for overall victory, Llewellyn Jones and Christophé Pichon, in their CEJ Plant Hire 434 CPMCC S5 Subaru Imprza WRX STi 4×4 Turbo 2.0 when the clutch cried enough shortly after leaving the start control on Special Stage 1.
No problem as Shaun Jones and Jason Thorpe upheld family honours by leading the event in their Advanced Asphalting 424 CPMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 4×4 Turbo 2.0 with John and Weston Peiser in hot pursuit in their Speed Pro Cycling 425 CPMCC S5 Subaru Impreza GT 4×4 Turbo 2.0. Special stage one was all about commitment and the challenging 17.39km Heuningberg route certainly set the scene for a magic duel at the front of the field as just two seconds separated the Scoobies.
Paul-Hendrik Franken and Lloyd Brady an impressive third in the Franken Motorsport 125 CPMCC S5 Volkswagen Polo Vivo GT 1.0 Turbo with Seraaj and Ziyaad Amlay making their intentions clear with fourth fastest time in the Ramlay Builders 457 CCMCC S3 Volkswagen Golf MkIII GTi 2.0 8v. Keenan Sassman and Ian Thebus fifth fastest in the returning Howard Centre Motors 413 CCMCC S4 Toyota Corolla RXi 1.8i with Owen Jones and Aden Bredenkamp sixth quickest on the opening stage.
Erin Joshua and Ibraheem Amlay sadly also had to retire the “new” 462 CCMCC S3 Toyota Tazz 1.6i on the opening stage when all four bolts sheared off the reight front hub. Fortunately no serious damage but their day was done.
Middelpos presented the remaining fifteen teams with another challenging 15km of sweeping, fast and flowing instructions and thankfully all managed to complete the stage. Rupert and Pieter van Zyl however decided to park their Hollandse Motor Specialist 405 CPMCC S3 Volkwagen Polo 2.0 8v for some 25 min whilst trying to coax the fuel pump into action again.
John and Weston Peiser took the fight to their opponents by winning the stage by three seconds, moving into the overall lead by one with Keenan Sassman and Ian Thebus slotting the S4 Corolla into third overall.
A brief visit to the service park at Porterville showgrounds had team heading back to Heuningberg where Shaun clawed back seven seconds form John Peiser with Owen Jones slipping into third overall. The “Four Cousins” Seraaj and Amlay and Riyaan and Yaseen Amlay disputing fourth spot with Winston Neethling and Lyle Marais creeping closer in the sweet sounding Howard Centre Motors 428 CCMCC S5 Nissan Sentra 2.0 4×4. Winston endured failing wipers and a spin on stage one and from SS2 there was intermittend drive to the front wheels but SS3 really got his attention when the brake pedal hit the floor. Going into the second half of the event the car only had rear wheel drive.
Well, it simply had to be special stage 4 that shook up the field. Owen Jones gave his dad, Shaun, a serious wake-up call by winning the stage by six seconds whilst John and Weston Peiser extinguished an oil fire under the bonnet of their Scoobie. Seraaj amazed by still heading Riyaan in the Four Cousins Challenge but Winston was coming closer with the acciDent Guru 469 CPMCC S3 Volkswagen Golf MkI 2.0 8v of Paul van Wyk and Tania Vermaak also starting to find good rhythm.
Sakkie van Zyl and Henry Köhne retired for a second successive event when their rapid Shatterfix 477 CPMCC S2 Volkswagen Golf MkI 1.6i ran out of rear shockabsorber oil whilst the rapid Corolla of Keenand Sassman and Ian Thebus sheared the driveshaft bolts. Kevin Calvert and Brian Hoskins also forced to retire their KC Transport 436 WPMC S3 Volkswagen Golf MkI after the freshly installed 2.0 8v engine set all it’s horsepower free.

Foto: Ghida Visser

Andy Birkett in Berg

MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon champion Andy Birkett has added his name to the growing list of
entries for the Berg River Canoe Marathon from 7 to 10 July as part of a new reciprocity between
the two oldest paddling events on the nationalcalendar.
The new exchange agreement with the Mylife Dusi will see the men’s and women’s winners
of the Dusi invited to race the Berg marathon, through the involvement of Kindo Covers, and
Birkett jumped at the opportunity. Birkett missed out on making the national team to the marathon world’s in Romania later in the year, and quickly set his sights on the 60th anniversary of the Berg.
“I love this river, the challenge, the grind and the constant web of channels and choices that you have to execute at speed but most of all I love the race vibe and people you meet along the way,” said Birkett.
There is a substantial interest in the Berg marathon this year, which will be run in full compliance with the prevailing lockdown rules, and the pre-Berg training Ultra Paddle has got under way with participation by paddlers around the world.
Confirming the deal with the Berg, MyLife Dusi committee chair Shane Le Breton said that, while the races were critically different, they were both pillars of the South African canoeing calendar.
“The MyLife Dusi is characterised by its portages, the KZN summer heat and the many rocky rapids on the uMsundusi and uMngeni Rivers, while the Berg takes on the Cape winter, treeblocks and long distances, so they seem to be
poles apart,” said le Breton.
“Both of them are household names in South African sport, and share a history going back more than sixty years. Both races share champions, as paddlers like Willem and Roelof van Riet, Mark Perrow, Abbey Ulansky, Robyn Kime, Alexa
Cole, Abby Solms, Hank McGregor and Andy Birkett have won both of them.
“These races are six months apart and are foundations on which South African canoeing is built. Both are bucket-list events that every paddlers wants to do, so it is exciting to be able to formalise the reciprocity agreement with the
Berg,” he added.
Under the deal, the winner of the men’s and women’s title at the 2021 MyLife will be invited to race the 2021 Berg, and the Berg champions will be offered K2 places in the 2022 Dusi.
“It will be exciting to have the Dusi champions on the start-line of the Berg and to send our champions to the next Dusi,” said Berg organiser Brandon Macleod.
“During the lockdown year of 2020 we staged the virtual Ultra Paddle, which has really fired up interest in doing the full Berg in 2021,” he said.
“We were excited to see how the MyLife Dusi was staged in full compliance with the lockdown regulations, and that has really galvanised the paddling community to focus on taking on the Berg in July.
“For some it will be a competitive outing, but for many it will be a great personal goal to set, and simply completing Berg is a feather in any paddler’s cap.
“During lockdown we have learnt to be resilient and work towards goals, and completing the 60th Berg has resonated with the paddling community,” he added.

Dining with D at Huiswinkels

Its that time again, time for us to visit a local institution that is filled with the most amazing goodies.
This week we visited Huiswinkels in Biccard Street.
When you enter the store you are immediately met with big smiles and the smell of freshly brewed coffee. We decided to sit on the stoep overlooking Biccard Street and the local court, with it being cloudy and overcast it was still very cozy on the stoep.
Of course we opted for Hot Chocolate due to the cold weather and then totally having our binge for the day.
Taking a walk through the rest of Huiswinkels you are totally overwhelmed by the Deli section of the store, from croissants to pancake mix in a bottle then moving on to the other amazing goods that are for sale. Beautiful leather products to kiddies goods can be seen and bought at Huiswinkels. There are also some amazing and beautiful paintings that can be purchased.
We must also not forget the freshly baked bread and pastries that are available as well.
Huiswinkels has a weekly menu that can be viewed on their Facebook page and can be ordered beforehand, there was some Curry and rice available when we were there and the smell was enough for us to want to take the whole pot and just want to jump in with a spoon.
While you are at Huiswinkels you can also visit one of the tenants that specialize in Body Alignment that can assist in restoring the body’s natural healing abilities.
We sat chatting while enjoying our hot chocolate, we then decided to order a breakfast tramezinni with chips as we would be running around for the rest of the day so we would work off the calories from our visit. Our order arrived and was made with such love, the eggs made exactly as we asked and plated with such beauty.
Of course, we enjoyed our time at Huiswinkels so much that we lost track of time and then had to make a mad dash to get to our next appointment, as we ran out to pay our bill we noticed some biscuits close to the counter and naturally we had to take some with for later, Chocolate Romany Creams, OMG – total “died and gone to heaven” moment!
Naturally, Huiswinkels scores FIVE-STARS on our scale of fabulousness.
You can visit Huiswinkels at 10 Biccard Street, Malmesbury.
Their hours are 08h00 to 18h00, Monday to Friday and 08h00 to 15h00 on a Saturday, or you can call them on 022 487 2000 or visit their website – www.huiswinkels.co.za and of course you can see all the amazing things that they are making on their Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/Huiswinkels
